Artist Steven Holland finds beauty amid drought’s devastation (Bronwyn Watson, The Australian)

In 2000, during the so-called millennium drought, Steven Holland decided to move to Soglio, a sheep-farming property belonging to one of the early settler families at Michelago on the outskirts of Canberra.

For Holland it was a time of despair as he walked around the property finding the skulls of sheep scattered throughout the drought-ridden landscape.

He was profoundly affected by the suffering of the sheep and, as a result, he began to think about the way 19th-century British culture had been transplanted to Australia, about the predicament of introduced animals brought to this country, and the effects of drought on both animals and people. In response to his musings, and in an attempt to find beauty in the face of devastation, he produced a series of sculptures made from the sheep skulls he found on the property…
